Google maintained its position as the market leader for the 11th consecutive month, and in fact strengthened its position as the most widely used search engine, according to a study by comScore Networks. Google's range of websites were used for 44.7% of all online searches in the U.S.A. Yahoo remained in second place with a market share of 28.5 percent, and Microsoft's MSN Search ranked third, with a 12.8 percent share, according to comScore.
The total number of 6.4 billion searches in June was 6% down from the 6.8 billion searches conducted in May. However the June 2006 figure was still significantly up (29%) from the 5 billion searches conducted in June 2005. The decline in the figure in June has been mainly contributed to the seasonal variations in search volumes that occur during the summer months. Last month, Google sites led in search query volume, with 2.9 billion searches conducted, followed by Yahoo sites, with 1.8 billion searches, and MSN/Microsoft sites, which had 818 million.
During the second quarter of 2006, browsers conducted 19.9 billion searches, up 12% from the 17.7 billion searches conducted in the first quarter of 2006, and up 30 percent from the 15.3 billion searches conducted in second quarter of 2005. In the second quarter of 2006, Google sites registered the most search queries performed, with 8.8 billion, followed by Yahoo sites, with 5.6 billion, and MSN/Microsoft, with 2.6 billion.
